The power of great product design: Lessons from my trip to the dentist

The power of great product design: Lessons from my trip to the dentist
Today, I experienced something that completely flipped my expectations. I went to the dentist (exciting, I know), and let me tell you, it wasn’t your typical trip.
As soon as I walked in, the vibe felt different. Soft lighting, cozy furnishings, jazz music playing softly in the background. I was handed a warm towel and offered some tea. This wasn’t just a dentist’s office; it felt more like a spa.
Though I was there for a routine cleaning, the entire experience felt designed with care. It wasn’t just about the procedure; it was about making me feel comfortable, relaxed, and valued. Every detail, from the cozy atmosphere to the personalized touches during the procedure, had me feeling at ease.
The Power of Experience in Product Design
It made me reflect on the power of great product design. How often do we forget that the experience around the product matters just as much as the product itself? A dentist visit could easily feel transactional and stressful, but by adding thoughtful details that go beyond just "doing the job," they created an experience that made me feel cared for.
This is exactly the mindset we need in product development. User experience isn’t just about functionality. It’s about crafting a solution that delights the user and solves problems in a way that feels human. We're not just building products; we’re creating experiences that can make someone’s day a little easier, or more comfortable.
Small Changes, Big Impact
Sometimes, the smallest changes in a product experience can have the biggest impact. It’s a reminder to focus on the whole experience, not just the outcome, and always look for opportunities to add thoughtful touches that enhance the user's journey.
